Liz writes: My boyfriend and I have been re-watching the last few seasons of Mad Men, and for all the fashion in the show to have questions about, we were most curious about the pocket square. There seem to be myriad ways to wear it, but we’re wondering if different folds tailored made suit  different occasions or styles. What’s the deal?

After all but disappearing in the 1990s, the pocket square has returned full force, and we’re just pleased as punch about it.  It’s a wonderful place to show a little taste and personality in an otherwise simple and uniform outfit.

The square can take a couple of forms, the simplest of which is plain white linen.  The square’s origins are as a handkerchief, and this style is closest to those roots.  A white linen square can be worn in almost any situation, in the breast pocket of almost any suit coat, sport coat or blazer.  Our only advice: don’t use it to blow your nose.  If you need one for that purpose (or for a lady’s tears), keep it in a pocket.  White linen handkerchiefs are available at any decent men’s store.  Look for hand-rolled edges - they’ll be nice and round, rather than flat and hard. Colored or patterned linen is also perfectly appropriate, particularly in warmer months.

One step dandier than plain linen is silk.  The variety of patterns and colors is immeasurable.  Pick one out to compliment your tailored made suit  s, not match them.  No tie-and-handkerchief sets, unless you’re sharing a bill with Steve Harvey.  Try colors that pick up the secondary colors in your outfit, like the check of a suit or the stripes on a shirt.  Again, hand-rolled edges are a must.  They should be full and plump.

There are as many ways to wear a pocket square as there are styles of silk square.  Don Draper wears a TV fold - a white linen square folded so only a white line peeks above the pocket.  This is appropriate for even very conservative business environments, but it can be a little dull, and won’t work with a silk square.  Linen can also be folded to show one, two or even three points.  Two is the middle path here, and most recommended if you want a precision folding job in your pocket. 

Generally, though, there’s no need to fold.  Pinch the center of your square, and let the points fall down below.  Then adjust the length by folding so it fits neatly in your pocket.  You can leave the “poof” out, leave the ends out, or even fold it roughly in half and put the poof behind the ends.  Tug it into place as necessary, and go forth! Your goal should be to seem to say, “what this?  It just happens to be there, and also to be spectacularly lovely.”

So what’s a french cuff?

Actually, before we answer this question, let’s answer another:

What’s a cuff?

The length of the sleeve

Few people know exactly one of the key elements when it comes to formal custom made suits: the length of the sleeve.

The answer is very clear: the sleeve (including the cuff) should be a little over the your arm’s wrist. If you’re wearing a jacket this rule because even more important because your cuff should be partially visible (about once centimeter or half an inch).

Buttons

Shirts with french cuffs have one small.. inconvenience: their sleeves don’t have buttons. But don’t panic: cuff-links to the rescue!

There are two types of cuff-links, and both work great with french cuffs.

· Regular metal cuff links. These are the most common ones, and the ones that are in style right now. Here’s a great pair:

How to Wash your Jeans

Jeans are expensive. The best denim can end up taking up to $300 from our pocket. Still many time we throw them away prematurely simply because they faded.
This happens because, after we wear them a few times, we throw them in the washing machine.

I’m not going to talk about the amazing outfits that you can pull off starting with a simple pair of jeans. I’ve already done that and, if you browse around the site, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of inspiration.

Today I want to solve a different problem. Ever had a favorite pair of jeans? If you’re like me, you probably wore it day after day. How about if I told you how to take care of those jeans, prolong their life and keep them clean?

I will give you some tips for keeping your jeans’ color for longer periods of time. The basic idea is to wash them as rare as possible, not once a week or month, as some would say.

· If you’ve been to the clubs with them and they now smell like cigarettes, take them outside for a few hours.

· If you’ve stained them, try and remove the stain as soon as possible, before it runs dry. Wash only that portion, not the entire piece of custom made suits.

· Hand wash them in cold water. It shouldn’t take long because, in most cases all you want to do is take out the smell.

If you’re not comfortable with the idea if washing them yourself, take them to a dry cleaners. It will save you time and trouble. Yes, jeans can be dry-cleaned (unless specified otherwise on the label).

What do I do if I decide to machine wash them?

· When it comes to washing, I recommend that you turn them inside out. This will protect the denim and thus, the color.

· if this is the first time you wash them you should put them in the washing machine alone. That’s right, no other custom made suits in there! At the second wash you can combine them with other clothes.

· Set the washing machine to use cold or slightly warm water. Cold water will help in maintaining your color.

· Use detergent that helps preserve color. 

Is not washing the answer?

Not washing them is NOT the answer, especially if they start to smell. Walking around in smelly or dirty clothes is a no-no, and I’m not even going to talk about this. It’s just plain wrong, and I hope you never-ever do it.

In fact, the moment you see that one of your clothing items has stains on it or a weird smell, I recommend you put that item directly in your laundry basket. Do whatever it takes to take the smell and/or stains out, or you’ll project a personal image that will be very hard to repair…

The reality is you can stand out without trying too hard. And, between you and me, standing out without appearing to try is the absolute best way to do it.
Why? Because people will assume you’re not trying to impress anyone. They’ll think you just happened to put on some made to measure suit  on you in the morning and that you put together your incredible attire by accident.

Standing Out: Your Self Assessment

By now you’re probably asking: Ok, George, how can I do this? How can I be cool without coming off as a try hard?

Before I open up my bag of tricks, I want you to get the mindset you need to have to pull this off. You know what they say:
Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.

You need to assess three things:
1. Your body flaws
2. Your body weaknesses
3. The people around you

Ok, you need to know what your body flaws are, and be brutally honest about it. Contrary to what you might expect, I’m not going to tell you to hide all your flaws.
Part of looking cool without appearing to try is to show a flaw or two that your body may have. We all have flaws and, by revealing one or two, your look will be more natural AND you’ll show the world you’re not trying to hide anything.
Finding the flaws should not be too daunting of a task. Just think what would happen if a woman you desire would walk in and see you naked. What would be the first thing she would see? What would be the second? Make a list and leave nothing out. (Tip: If you’re embarrassed that someone might find that list, it’s ok to do it on the computer and delete it afterwards).
Examples of body weaknesses include (but are not limited to):

- height
- weight
- baldness
- shoulder slouch
- messed-up teeth
- thick and/or rebel hair
- narrow shoulders and/or waist
- skinny arms or legs
- black spots or pimples on your face
- back hair
- too much chest hair
- and the list goes on and on

Stand in front of a mirror for 15 minutes if you have to and leave nothing out or you might sabotage your chances with women because of some hidden flaw.

Ok, now let’s talk a little about your body strengths. These are just as important as your weaknesses so be very meticulous about finding them.
You may find that…
- you have wide shoulders (very attractive to the ladies)
- you’re (very) tall
- you have a muscular body
- you have blue or green eyes (I’ll show you how to make those stand out later on)- and so on

Now that you have the two lists, let’s remember for a moment what you want to achieve here. You want to look cool without trying too hard.
The trick is to hide all your body flaws BUT ONE. Oops!

If you intentionally show a flaw that you may have, you’ll show your soft side.
It could be the fact that you have a dark spot on your face and you trim your facial hair in a way which makes it obvious you considered its presence.
Maybe you have skinny legs and you’re wearing shorts with striped socks instead of hiding them.
Here’s an example from my own personal experience: I have pretty thick eyebrows and I found that a white and navy rugby shirt works wonders on me. The thick horizontal stripes form a pattern into which my eyebrows take part. Not that obvious but you won’t know what works for you until you try.
Whatever you do, make sure you don’t take this too far. One flaw, that’s it. The rest of your made to measure suit   should be as cool as possible without making you feel uncomfortable.

First thing’s first. I’ll answer “the t-shirt” objection:

Shirts have an advantage over t-shirt: they come in vertical stripes. You’ll never see t-shirts in vertical stripes and you need them to make yourself look taller.

OK, things get a little complicated. But not too much. In casual encounters, it’s best to keep your shirt’s first button unbuttoned. This causes the two ends of the collar to spread out, widening your frame. In such cases, even narrow collared shirts will make your frame look wider.

Though they are rare, there is a type of shirt that won’t have this problem: the mandarin collared shirt. Mandarin collars are missing the pointy edges that most dress shirt have so unbuttoning the first button at the top won’t make your frame look wider.
