What should I wear to the prom

The prom is one of the most difficult events for which to dress.  A lady is expected to be buying a dress for the night, not to mention shoes and accessories and an expensive hairdo.  A fella, not so much. So: what to do?

Most proms are black-tie affairs, and I don’t see any reason to buck that.  Attempts to dress it down, with say a black suit, are unlikely to look anything but slightly dumpy.  At my own prom, a few friends wore matching Run DMC-style Adidas sweatsuits, with matching sneakers and hats.  That was kind of good.  But they also didn’t have dates.    Why make it a joke?

The default option is to rent a tuxedo.  It’s nearly impossible to find rental tuxedos that are anything other than polyester-blend monstrosities, and since you can’t alter it, it’s unlikely to fit well.  Every piece of your wardrobe will end up being slightly off, and the result will be an outfit that would best be described as barely passable.

So what are your other options?

.With the current coupon, an  custom tux would only cost you about three or four hundred dollars.  That’s a lot of scratch for most high school students, but it also means you’ll have a tuxedo for life (if you’re done growing).  I wore the dinner jacket from my senior prom to an evening wedding a year ago - almost ten years later.  The durability issues you might find with lower-end made-to-measure are minimized in a tux, since you won’t be wearing it very often.

If that seems like a lot to you, go vintage.  Tuxedos from the 30s through 60s will look just as sharp today.  Avoid anything newer, as you’re likely going to end up with polyester.  Remember to tie your own tie, and look hard, starting now, for something that fits you - and budget $50-100 for tailoring once you’ve found what you want.  Don’t try to buy separates (unless you live somewhere warm and want a white dinner jacket), and try to match the elements aesthetically.  A narrow-lapel 60s tux with a smaller bow tie, and so forth.  And tie your own bow.  A new or new-er shirt from someplace like Brooks Brothers or Jos. A. Bank will work fine.  Your tux can come from eBay or, if you’re lucky enough to live in a cool city, a vintage store.  You should be able to find something for less than $100, with enough careful looking.

Besides that, we recommend bringing a pretty girl.  That really jazzes the whole thing up.

Surgeon’s Cuffs and Kissing Buttons

Working Cuffs (AKA “Surgeon’s Cuffs”) 

When it comes a well-made suit, it’s all about the details. Why? The details can be a very heuristic tell of the suit’s quality. Perhaps the most well known feature of a high quality suit and one of the hallmark details of custom suiting are “Working Cuffs”, aptly named for suit sleeve buttons that are functional and work. They are also known as “Surgeon’s Cuffs”, after military surgeons who had to unbutton and roll up their sleeves to work in the field. And while you probably won’t be rolling up your tailored made suit sleeves to pull a bullet out of anyone anytime soon, this is in fact a detail you’ll want. Just leave that last sleeve button unbuttoned, showing the world (in a very subtle way) that your suit is indeed one of higher quality. It’s a sartorial wink of sorts to all the other style-minded gents in the know.

Be playful, be irreverent…hell, turn your sleeve buttons it into a code language with your coworker and save your next client meeting–1-button-unbuttoned = “yes”,  2-buttons unbuttoned = “no”, 3-buttons unbuttoned = “let’s get the hell out of here and grab a cold one.”

Kissing Buttons (also called stacked or “waterfall” buttons)

So what about kissing buttons? First the obligatory technical definition: kissing buttons are buttons that touch slightly as opposed to being spaced apart. Popular with Italian suits, stacked buttons or “waterfall” buttons, are a type of “kissing” buttons that are slightly overlapping one another. A lot of tailors will simply use the term “kissing buttons” to refer to this type of stacked arrangement. The charm of the stacked buttons is to imply that the buttons are ever so “imperfectly” aligned, suggesting the suit is handmade (and not machine made). In other words, it’s another one of those details that says, “Hey, I’m probably a well-tailored suit”.

In reality, a lot of high quality suits will feature sleeve buttons that are kissing and not kissing. It comes down to your stylistic preference–what looks good to you. Some like the handmade look of stacked buttons (we’re certainly fans), while others prefer a neat row of spaced out parallel buttons. Maybe it, along with the other options you choose for your custom tailored made suit , is a better indicator of personality type more than suit quality – a kind of Myers Briggs profile told in Super numbers, button types and lapel shapes.  In case you’re wondering, we range from ENFPs to ISTJs here at Black Lapel HQ and our suits are even more diverse!

Remember, in the end, a custom suit is about customizing a beautiful piece of garment for YOU. So don’t be afraid to have fun with your design and display a little personality once in awhile.

Dressing for the IT Crowd

Jake’s sad story reads thusly: I work in the IT department for a fairly large company.  Compared to the amount of people working for the company the IT department is fairly small.  This last year I’ve been trying to get promoted from system administrator to senoir system administrator where I would actually be managing people.  I’ve been told I have a good shot and that I’m the most qualified to get moved into that position.  So, for the last year I’ve been dressing the part of management. Everyday it’s nice dress pants, a fitted button up shirt and a tie.  A few times when there are meetings I wear a suit. I follow all the rules on your websites.  I even brought all my pants to a tailor to have them adjusted because they were too long. 

IT has always had a history of dressing… well a little like IT:  Jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes and polos are a very common sight around the IT office.  I only wear jeans on casual friday and never with a polo.  Here is my dilemma.  My attire has raised the eyebrows of those who I hope to manage some day.  Suits and ties are reserved for our salesmen and high up management (who all dress very poorly.  So much pant leg pooling going on around here). 

How can I dress up to be management material but still not lose my IT/geek identity?  I don’t want to alienate those that I hope to lead some day, and I definitely don’t want to be bunched in with the fist-bumping salesmen of our company.  Is there a way to do this?

This is tough for me to read.  It amazes me that geeks - the very same people who got picked on for non-conformity in their school days - so often insist on conformity in the workplace.  To say nothing of the fact that the conformity they often demand is “we’re all equally slovenly.”  I don’t think that cursing your situation is the only answer, though, Jake.

The first step for you, I think, is recognizing the difference between dressing well and dressing up.

It sounds like you’re on that road already, but let’s go over it anyway.

Dressing well must always include situational awareness.  You dress to make an impression; to understand the impression you’re making, you have to put yourself in other people’s shoes.  Your choices have to be made with some understanding of what their effects will be, or you’re flailing blindly.  Other people’s opinions needn’t be the sole factor in deciding how you’ll present yourself, but they should be afactor.

In your situation, it sounds like you want to distinguish yourself from your peers without alienating them.  That’s a needle to thread, but it’s possible.  The key is to look like the sharpest, most serious IT guy, not like the most IT-guyish manager.  That might mean a blazer with jeans, or simply casual clothes that fit well and look good.  What it probably doesn’t mean is slacks, a dress shirt and a tie, which is pretty much the uniform of the bank teller (or sweaty widget salesman).

Unfortunately, we don’t get to pick how others see us.  We can, however, pick what we present to them.  And that choice can include anticipating their reactions.  It’s entirely possible to dress well without being a dick.

How to Select a Suitable Type of The Slack

It seems there is no choice that men have to wear the common types of pants. However, the men's designer is constantly innovative and make efforts to promote the fashion district. Right now, it is the season for mens casual pants, quickly take a look at the season's fashion trends.

Men's pants Unlike Ms. pants as changing, but still has its own variations. Broadly divided into three types.
The first one is multi-pleated
In front of the waist design several pleated pants for almost all of the wearer, regardless of body fat, thin. Because these pleats have a certain "expansion", potbellied fat people wear pleated natural distraction, so that the wearer was not tight, but it was not very spiritual neat.
The second is a single pleat

Five Reasons to Wear Ties

In the beginning I’d like to quote an extremely well known American designer named Bill Blass:

Sometimes the eye gets so accustomed that if you don’t have a change, you’re bored. It’s the same with fashion, you know. And that, I suppose, is what style is about.

One of the easiest and inexpensive ways to make a change in your wardrobe is to wear accessories. Women have plenty to choose from but men seem to be limited when it comes to them. Not so!

If you want a stylish accessory, ties are the solution.

And since I don’t give advice just to hear myself speak, I have exactly five reasons for you in favor of wearing ties.

1 Ties can be worn with blue jeans. When we think of ties, we automatically think suits. Not exactly so – you can wear them with casual  custom made suits as well ! If you want to impress a girl or just wear something different, you don’t have to spend big bucks on plenty of clothes. Wear the same ones and add a tie.

2 You will look taller. Vertical stripes on a shirt give the impression that the person is taller than he or she actually is. Ties achieve the same effect. Trust me, the effect is as real as it can be!

3 You’ll look classy. Even if you go for slim ties, you’re still inclining the balance towards casual for your outfit. It’s one thing to wear a big sliver chain around your neck and it’s completely different to wear a tie.

4 You have plenty to choose from. Generally, when matching custom made suits  it’s hard to play with colors and patterns. You risk looking ridiculous. When it comes to ties, however, you can choose from the plethora of patterns: uni (without any patterns), with stripes even with animals silhouettes (I’ve seen one of those they look awesome!)

5 The tie can be the one colored element in an otherwise dark outfit. If you’re just starting changing your wardrobe, you may have a lot of black, white and gray clothes in your closet. if they fit you you can just add a colored uni tie to make things interesting (for instance, if you have a gray V-neck and a  white shirt you can get a nice orange tie. Try it out!

 Now that you have some serious reasons to wear ties, there’s only one thing left: to go try a few  of them out. And don’t forget to learn at least one tie knot.

Here’s how to do it:

6 decide whether you want a suit tie or a casual one. Suit ties should always be made out of silk while the slim ones can be made of synthetics (thus you’ll end up cheaper).

7 Wear your favorite shirt or t-shirt, with which you intend to wear the tie with.

8 Go to your local mall and try at least a dozen of them. See how each color goes with what you’re already wearing. If would be useful if, beforehand, you read a little about how and which colors go together and how they should be matched with your skin complexion.

9 Find the one you like best, try it on one more time and then BUY IT.

The last step is the most important one. I’m not telling you to buy just to spend your money. I will never ever do that.

If this is your first tie that you plan on wearing regularly, getting it now is a commitment form your part that you’re serious about changing your wardrobe. If you procrastinate you may end up not getting one at all and… my article would be useless.

Everything about the French Cuff

Maybe an even better title for this article would be “How to Make Outstanding Impressions in Your Business Meetings”. French cuffs are perfect for such situations.

So what’s a french cuff?

Actually, before we answer this question, let’s answer another:

What’s a cuff?

A cuff is the bottom part of a men’s shirt. custom made suits  This area actually has a different feel to the touch because it has an extra layer of fabric. The purpose of this is two-fold: first, the cuff keeps the end of the sleeve tighter so it won’t slip over one’s hand. The other is that it prevents fraying.

Just in case you still have trouble picturing where it is: the sleeve’s buttons and holes are also located on the cuff. Got it? OK. Let’s talk a little about the french cuff

The french cuff is a special kind of cuff: you have to fold it before you button it. For this reason, it’s made twice as long. Take a close look at the picture from the beginning of this article and you’ll see that, in fact, the cuff has been folded upwards (over itself).

As you can imagine, shirts with french cuffs are very long – when unfolded, the cuffs can cover part of your fingers. This is why french cuffs are also called “double cuffs”.

Since I’ve named this article “everything about the french cuff“, let’s analyse a small detail. There are two types of french cuffs: simple and rounded. Here’s the difference:

Which one should you choose? If you’re not sure, pick either one. There are more important details when it comes to putting together a formal outfit and, if you want to stand out more, besides buttons (which we’ll talk about in a moment) you also have to choose a great tie and pocket square.

The length of the sleeve

Few people know exactly one of the key elements when it comes to formal custom made suits: the length of the sleeve.

The answer is very clear: the sleeve (including the cuff) should be a little over the your arm’s wrist. If you’re wearing a jacket this rule because even more important because your cuff should be partially visible (about once centimeter or half an inch).

Buttons

Shirts with french cuffs have one small.. inconvenience: their sleeves don’t have buttons. But don’t panic: cuff-links to the rescue!

There are two types of cuff-links, and both work great with french cuffs.

· Regular metal cuff links. These are the most common ones, and the ones that are in style right now. Here’s a great pair:

· Silk cuff links. They’re made entirely from silk or elastic and are usually worn with french cuffs. They come in a variety of colors, take a look:
 

To sum up…

If you were anxious and jumped straight to the end of this article, here’s what you should remember from it:

· The cuff is a shirt’s extremity where the sleeve ends.

· The french cuff (or double) is a special type of cuff that folds over itself

· You can wear french cuffs to formal occasions but it can also be worn on more formal occasions if you know how.

· The french cuff doesn’t have any buttons. You MUST also purchase a pair of cuff links.

A last piece advice: never wear your french cuffs unfolded. If you want to look more relaxed, there are other alternatives:

· In formal situations you can take off your tie or unbutton the top button from your shirt.

· In informal situations you can open a second button from your shirt.

OK, I hope I convinced you that such a shirt is worth investing if you have important business meetings. Heck, it’s worth it even if you don’t but you want to make an impression.

Seriously now, it’s a big confusion guys make. Let me tell you what that difference is and why it’s so important.

Fashion is an industry and it’s all about changing trends. Whenever I think about fashion I think about dressy fat-cats who make up some new collection every year to make people buy over and over again.

How do they do that?

They make people feel bad about the way they look. They make them feel bad about not being fashionable.

You’re wearing last year’s color? You need to evolve, man!

This shirt is from last year’s collection? Stop wearing it! haven’t you see the new designs? Denim is back in fashion, man!

And on and on.

This is how the industry works. All in all, they don’t care what you look like in those clothes. All it matter is that you buy.

Let em ask you a critical question: have you ever bought something from the latest trends, spent a fortune then felt uncomfortable wearing it? I know I have.

But the weird thing was I tried to find reasons why it was a good choice.

Reasons like: 
Oh, this is what everyone else is wearing!

or

Everyone else pays 50% more to get this! I got a very good deal.

The fact of the matter was, these were all irrational reasons. I didn’t want to admit to myself the fact that I screwed up when I bought the damn thing.

If you buy what fashion dictates is not only expensive but you’ll end up looking like everyone else. Not a good deal, right?

OK, now that you know to take any fashion advice with a grain of salt, let’s talk a little about what style is.

Style is all about YOU. About looking and feeling better about yourself.

It’s about wearing custom made suits  that flatter you instead of clothes that are trendy this year.

It’s about mixing and matching color and patterns.

1. Wear a pocket square!

Wearing a tailored made suit  just won’t do it anymore. Look, if you want to be perceived as the next billionaire, if you want people to KNOW that they can make money with you, you have to show you’re willing to step out of the crowd.

And what better way to do than than to wear a pocket square?

Think about it: you’ll still wear your suits and, at the same time, you get to show “you’ve got it”.

Pocket squares have been worn with tailored made suit s ever since the beginning of the 20th century and they’re STILL fashionable. Even more, men have started wearing them with casual outfits.

I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t get one or ever a set of 3.

2. Try a pair of brown shoes!

Black leather shoes are great but brown is the new black. You’re not like most men – you want to dress to stand out. A pair of brown shoes will make the world of difference. Just make sure you match them with a brown belt.
3. Wear cufflinks!

One accessory that’s less visible than the pocket square (but can make an even greater impact!) are cufflinks. For this you’ll need a shirt with a french cuff but trust me, it’s well worth the money.

Match the buttons with your eyes if you have them blue or green – the effect is amazing.

4. Get a stylish messenger bag

Don’t be like the next businessman with your black leather suit case that screams “I’m a geek outside the office too!” Get a nice messenger men’s bag with a stylish shape. Make sure it’s big enough, though, to be able to contain all your papers.

5. Go for a gray suit

If you don’t want to switch black shoes for brown, how about your black tailored made suit   for gray? Even better, wear your new gray suit WITH your brown shoes.

Gray is versatile and communicates class. It can also be matched with both black shoes and brown shoes.

6. Wear a Trench coats

Trench coats are THE #1 solution for your suit on rainy days. They’re fashionable, they’re versatile and they look good.

7. Get a pair of tortoise shell sunglasses

If you’re tired of your RayBan or Wayfarer sunglasses, how about a tortoise shell? You’ll definitely make an impression.
